About Chris

Chris O'Brien began his career as an architect and worked in the Newcastle steel and building industries where he designed and oversaw the construction of many projects. Chris commenced his studies in law in 1999. Whilst studying, Chris volunteered with criminal lawyer, Nicolas Moir. As a law graduate in 2003, Chris commenced employment with Mr. Moir.

Chris was admitted as a solicitor and barrister of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 2004. Chris was then admitted to practice in the High Court of Australia.

For several years Chris was mentored by both solicitor Nicolas Moir and Paul Rosser QC in criminal law. Chris has appeared in all of the New South Wales criminal courts including the New South Wales Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeal.

Since 2006 Chris has volunteered his time to the Newcastle University to assist in the Moot Trials for academics hoping to obtain a legal degree. Chris has also donated his time to the Newcastle University Legal Centre for legal advice sessions.

In 2007, Nicolas Moir, Chris O'Brien and Paul Rosser QC formed a partnership known as Nicolas Moir and Associates Pty Ltd. Nicolas Moir and Associates changed it's trading name to Morelaw Solicitors and Barristers in 2009. Morelaw is an acronym for the then three partners; Moir, O'Brien and Rosser.

In 2007 Chris became the convener of lawyers for the Broadmeadow Traffic Offenders Program. Chris frequently lectures the legal topics for the program.

In early 2010 Nicolas Moir and Chris ended their partnership. Chris took over the law firm to continue Nicolas Moir's legacy. Nicolas Moir now works independantly as a barrister in Newcastle. Chris continues to associate with and instruct Nicolas in their respective roles in the criminal justice system.
